Captain's Log: August 4, 2026

Schooner HARVEY GAMAGE at Castine Maine - August 4, 2026

After a four hour transit from Bucksport in Penobscot Bay the Schooner HARVEY GAMAGE is snugly alongside the town dock at Castine. We sailed with 20 folks who came to us through the Penobscot Maritime Museum and Four-Point Loop group who are all keen supporters of all things maritime in this area. It was a wet, gray, and windy passage around but good time had by all.

Castine is the home of the Maine Maritime Academy and alma mater of our good captain Asher and 1^st mate Mackenzie as well. This quaint village was once a major seaport in New England rivaling Boston and New York. Fortified for the War of 1812, and the site for an embarrassing loss in the American Revolution against the pesky Redcoats Castine is now a bucolic “down-east” seaside town with charm to spare. Has a lovely book store as well. Two beautiful windjammer schooners sailed in after the GAMAGE under reefed canvas to come to anchor for the evening and ride out the weather. The schooner MARY DAY and the AMERICAN EAGLE. Both wonderful vessels to take a weeks cruise in with great food and camaraderie.

This morning came in warm, fair and clear. Beautiful crystal clear skies and light winds. The GAMAGE is conducting open ship allowing folks to come aboard to a get a good look at a real and proper wooden ship, one of the last built in Maine. The friendly crew is a good spirits and happy to show folks around and tell about the schooners trips for kids and also trips for adults. Aboard the schooner all hands keep learning about ships, the sea, the environment, and introducing young folks to the idea of looking at marine trades. Lots of great jobs out there for folks that can do stuff. And having a great time sailing a stout vessel through beautiful waters making friends along the way.
