Northern Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction
Protecting one of the world's most endangered whales through education and advocacy
MISSION STATEMENT
The Northern Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction Initiative exists to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale by reducing vessel strikes through real-time maritime technology, mariner engagement, and science-driven safety measures along the Eastern Seaboard.

We deploy AIS-based coastal transceivers in federally protected waters to deliver direct navigational alerts to vessel operators, ensuring that speed restrictions and whale protection zones are communicated clearly, instantly, and without disrupting bridge operations. By integrating conservation with practical seamanship, we strengthen compliance, enhance maritime safety, and support a sustainable working waterfront.

This initiative directly supports the broader mission of the Marine Learning Project by integrating marine conservation with workforce development and experiential education. Students gain exposure to maritime safety systems, navigation technology, environmental policy, and marine science in real-world contexts. By connecting ocean stewardship with professional maritime practice, the initiative reinforces our commitment to preparing the next generation of maritime leaders while protecting Maine's coastal ecosystems and working waterfront.
OUR WORK

- Whale alert system education
- Best practices for vessel operations
Industry Collaboration
We work directly with shipping companies, fishing operations, and ferry services to develop and implement voluntary protective measures.
- Route optimization consultations
- Bridge team training programs
- Technology integration support
- Recognition of industry leadership
Speed Restriction Advocacy
We advocate for seasonal speed restrictions in right whale critical habitat and support enforcement of existing protections.
- Public comment on regulatory proposals
- Coalition building with conservation groups
- Community outreach and awareness campaigns
- Legislative education and engagement
Educational Integration
Right whale conservation is woven throughout our Discovery Voyages curriculum, building the next generation of ocean stewards.
