Reflecting on 2025

In 2025, the Marine Learning Project's SEAfaring Camp was officially launched aboard the SSV Harvey Gamage.

Collaboration: In the spring, over 30 educators, sailors, and marine trade professionals convened to establish the Marine Learning Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting students to the sea. As the organization continues to develop, we reflect on the accomplishments of 2025.

Outreach: The Marine Learning Project attended, presented, and participated in several events including:

  • Wiscasset Wormfest
  • Windjammer Days
  • Maine Boat and Home Show
  • Maine Marine Trades Association Annual Meeting
  • Blue Schools Maine Summit
  • Music, Masts, and Lobster Traps 2025

Education:In the fall, educators from public and private Maine schools, coastal environmental education nonprofits, and marine trade professionals gathered for a large education committee meeting. This meeting formed a core group of curriculum volunteers who are developing programs that can be integrated into the regular school day across the state.

SEAfaring Camp 2025: Modeled after a traditional sea semester aboard the Harvey Gamage but designed as economically accessible one-week voyages for Maine students, SEAfaring Camp ran for five weeks in summer 2025. During this time, 60 Maine students connected to the sea aboard the Harvey Gamage, with weekly trips visiting the Herring Gut Institute, the Maine Maritime Academy, Boothbay, Rockland, and more.
