Northern Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction Program

The Northern Right Whale Ship Strike Reduction Program is a collaborative initiative focused on reducing vessel-related threats to the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis). With fewer than 360 individuals remaining, every whale counts—and vessel collisions are among the leading human-caused sources of injury and death for this iconic species.

This program works to raise awareness, implement science-based policies, and support mariners in making operational changes that reduce the risk of ship strikes, particularly in high-traffic migratory corridors and feeding grounds along the Eastern Seaboard of North America.

This project aims to install AIS transceivers along the coast of Maine. These transceiver units send messages to overspeed vessels in federally protected zones. This message lands directly onto the navigational equipment of boaters, pilots and crew so they do not need to leave their post to receive the warning it contains.

Proposal

The Marine Learning Project along with the Wiscasset school system aims to install and maintain 13 AIS transceiver units in Maine Lighthouses along the Atlantic coast.
