The Harvey Gamage is a 131' is a traditional gaff-rigged schooner launched in 1973 from the Harvey F. Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine. The last of the many commercial wooden shipyard in Maine. She was designed by McCurdy & Rhodes, Naval Architects in Cold Spring Harbor, New York and Frederick W. Bates of Damariscotta, Maine. She is a USCG inspected vessel both as a passenger vessel (subchapter T) and a sail training vessel (46 CFR 166 subchapter R-Nautical Schools). As governments of maritime countries recognize Sail Training as an essential component of developing and maintaining an essential merchant marine force, the US Congress created a special service category of vessel for Sail Training and the Harvey Gamage is one of a handful of vessels licensed for this service. She has been educating students at sea along the east coast of North American almost continuously since her launch. She has 26 bunks for accommodating 26 students, with 9 professional crew. As a training vessel, she takes crews of students along the eastern seaboard, from her home port in Maine to various destinations ranging from the Canadian Maritimes to the isles of the Caribbean.
The renowned blue-water Maine Schooner HARVEY GAMAGE is sailing this summer along the coast of Maine and New England taking young folks to sea under sail to learn the ways of a schooner, the sea and to experience the beautiful islands, bays, harbors and backwaters all along the coast of New England. The HARVEY GAMAGE is the Flagship of the Marine Learning Project making voyages of sea experience and growing mariners for the future.
The HARVEY GAMAGE has positions available for and is seeking qualified and credentialed watch-officer/mates and deck-hands for the vessel starting in May of 2026 through September under way, and a layup period to follow.
The schooner will be sailing the coast of New England from Portland, Maine and Penobscot Bay and will be joining the fleet of the worlds sailing ships at Tall Ship celebrations July 4th in New York and followed by joining the fleet in Boston.
Most of these sailing trips will be with young high school students in a structured coastwise sea experience. Some adult sail-training trips are planned as well.
An excellent opportunity to build one’s sea-time and increase skill levels, all the while carrying out and advancing your craft sailing the beautiful coasts of Maine and New England in a fine, and well-found vessel. If you are a dedicated mariner, keen to work hard, learn more of the schooner seafaring life and grow on the job, get in touch soon.
