2026 Discovery Voyages
Discovery Voyage is an immersive sailing experience aboard the historic schooner Harvey Gamage, designed for incoming 8th grade and high school students. While living and working at sea, students explore maritime history, marine science and ocean systems while gaining firsthand exposure to Maine's working waterfront and maritime heritage. Through hands-on experiential learning, participants help sail the vessel, stand watch and take part in daily shipboard life while developing leadership, communication, collaboration, time management and problem-solving skills. Each voyage includes 23 Student Spaces.
Planned voyages are listed below, though schedules and destinations are still being finalized and are subject to change. Tuition is currently expected to be approximately $1,800 per student, longer weeks are expected to be more expensive. Upon registration families will receive and invoice for the cost of the trip. From that invoice there will be an immediate deposit of at least $300 due to reserve a space. Final payment will be due 2 weeks prior to the voyage start. Voyage 1: Portland to Portland | May 24–29 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage at Portland Yacht Services at 1:00 PM to begin a five-day sailing journey exploring Maine’s coastal waters. This voyage will include sailing through Casco Bay and its surrounding islands, visiting Seguin Island, and a planned stop at the UNH Research Laboratory in Biddeford to learn about marine science and ocean research. Throughout the trip, students will participate in sailing the vessel, standing watch, and working together as part of the crew. The voyage concludes with disembarkation at Portland Yacht Services at 11:00 AM.
Voyage 2: Portland to Bath | May 31–June 5 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage at Portland Yacht Services at 1:00 PM to begin a five-day sailing voyage along the Maine coast. The trip will include visits to Seguin Island and the Calendar Islands, offering opportunities to explore the region’s maritime history and coastal ecosystems while actively participating in sailing the vessel and standing watch. Midweek, the vessel is planned to tie up in Bath for educational tours at either Bath Iron Works (BIW) or the Maine Maritime Museum (MMM). The voyage concludes with disembarkation in Bath at 11:00 AM.
Voyage 3: Bath to Wiscasset | June 7–12 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Bath at 1:00 PM to begin a five-day sailing voyage along the midcoast of Maine. The trip will include sailing near Seguin Island and the Boothbay region, with opportunities to explore the area’s maritime environment while participating in sailing the vessel and standing watch. Educational visits are planned with local maritime industry partners such as Washburn & Doughty, the Harvey Gamage shipyard, or Nat Wilson Boatworks, offering students insight into traditional boatbuilding and Maine’s working waterfront. The voyage concludes with disembarkation in Wiscasset at 11:00 AM.
Voyage 4: Wiscasset to New Bedford to Boothbay | June 13–19 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Wiscasset at 12:00 PM, departing that afternoon for a multi-day coastal passage to New Bedford, Massachusetts. The voyage includes sailing through the Cape Cod Canal and experiencing a longer offshore transit while standing watch and participating in daily shipboard operations. While docked in New Bedford, students may visit the New Bedford Whaling Museum and take part in a possible Harvey Gamage alumni gathering. The vessel will then return north to Boothbay Harbor, where students will disembark at approximately 4:00 PM.
Voyage 5: Boothbay to Portland | June 21–26 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Boothbay Harbor at 1:00 PM to begin a five-day voyage along Maine’s midcoast. During the trip, students may visit local maritime industry partners such as Washburn & Doughty, the Harvey Gamage shipyard, or Nat Wilson Boatworks, gaining firsthand insight into Maine’s boatbuilding traditions and working waterfront. The voyage will also include participation in Boothbay Harbor’s Windjammer Days Parade of Sail, offering a unique opportunity to sail alongside traditional vessels. The voyage concludes with disembarkation in Portland at 11:00 AM.
Voyage 6: Portland to New York | June 27–July 7 Tuition: TBD
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage at Portland Yacht Services at 1:00 PM to begin an extended coastal voyage south to New York Harbor. Along the way, the vessel will stop in Mystic, Connecticut, where students will travel up the Mystic River, dock at Mystic Seaport, and tour the museum before continuing the journey. The voyage will culminate with participation in OpSail New York events, where students will experience a gathering of tall ships and maritime celebrations in New York Harbor. Students will disembark at 11:00 AM in New York following the conclusion of the OpSail events.
Voyage 7: New York to Boston | July 8–13 Tuition: TBD
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in New York at 10:00 AM, departing at noon for a coastal voyage to Boston. The trip includes offshore sailing and crew participation while transiting north, arriving in Boston by Friday evening. Once in port, students will take part in OpSail Boston events, experiencing tall ships and maritime celebrations in the harbor. Students will disembark at 11:00 AM in Boston following the conclusion of the events.
Voyage 8: Boston to Portsmouth | July 13–17 Tuition: TBD
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Boston at 3:00 PM to begin a voyage that includes participation in the final OpSail Boston events, offering the chance to experience tall ships and maritime celebrations in one of the nation’s historic ports. Following the events, the vessel will sail north along the New England coast to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where students will continue standing watch and participating in daily shipboard operations. The voyage concludes with disembarkation at 11:00 AM in Portsmouth.
Voyage 9: Portsmouth to Portland | July 19–24 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Portsmouth at 1:00 PM for a coastal voyage north to Portland Yacht Services. Along the way, the voyage may include stops at the Isles of Shoals and the UNE Marine Laboratory in Biddeford, providing opportunities to explore marine science and the unique ecosystems of the Gulf of Maine. Throughout the journey, students will take part in sailing the vessel, standing watch, and participating in daily shipboard life. The voyage concludes with disembarkation at 11:00 AM in Portland.
Voyage 10: Portland to Bath | July 26–31 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage at Portland Yacht Services at 1:00 PM to begin a voyage along Maine’s midcoast. The trip will include sailing to Seguin Island and the Calendar Islands, giving students the opportunity to explore the region’s coastal environment while participating in sailing the vessel and standing watch. The trip may include a stop at Seguin Island and visits with regional maritime industry partners such as Washburn & Doughty, the Harvey Gamage shipyard, or Nat Wilson Boatworks, offering students insight into traditional boatbuilding and Maine’s working waterfront. Throughout the voyage, students will participate in sailing the vessel, standing watch, and daily shipboard life. The voyage concludes with disembarkation at 11:00 AM in Rockland.Boarding is at 9:00 AM Monday in Wiscasset, with disembarkation at 1:00 PM Friday in Wiscasset. The first voyage runs June 1–5, featuring visits to Maine Maritime Museum, Bath Iron Works, and Seguin Island.
Voyage 12: Rockland to Portland | August 10–15 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Rockland at 1:00 PM to begin a coastal voyage through Maine’s midcoast islands and working waterfront communities. The voyage may include sailing through Penobscot Bay, exploring island anchorages, and visiting regional maritime partners or coastal research sites. Throughout the week, students will participate in sailing the vessel, standing watch, and daily shipboard responsibilities while learning about the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and maritime history. The voyage concludes with disembarkation at 11:00 AM in Portland at Portland Yacht Services.
Voyage 13: Portland to Wiscasset | August 17–21 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage at Portland Yacht Services at 1:00 PM for a voyage along Maine’s midcoast. Planned stops may include Seguin Island and the Calendar Islands, offering opportunities to explore coastal navigation, marine habitats, and lighthouse history. During the voyage, students will stand watch, help sail the vessel, and take part in daily shipboard life. The trip concludes with disembarkation at 11:00 AM in Wiscasset.
Voyage 14: Wiscasset to Portland | August 24–28 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage in Wiscasset at 1:00 PM to begin the final Discovery Voyage of the season. The voyage will include sailing through the Sheepscot and Casco Bay regions, with potential stops at coastal islands and working waterfront communities. Students will continue developing seamanship skills while learning about Maine’s maritime economy and ocean environment. The voyage concludes with disembarkation at 11:00 AM at Portland Yacht Services.
Voyage 15: Gloucester Schooner Festival | August 31–September 7 Tuition: $1,800
Students will board the schooner Harvey Gamage at Portland Yacht Services at 1:00 PM to begin a coastal voyage south to Gloucester, Massachusetts. The trip will include several days of offshore sailing as the vessel transits from Portland to Gloucester, with students participating in sailing operations, standing watch, and daily shipboard life. While in Gloucester, students will take part in the Gloucester Schooner Festival, which may include public activities, deck tours, and opportunities to experience traditional schooners from across the region. The voyage culminates with participation in the Schooner Race and award ceremony before students disembark at 11:00 AM following the event.
